To convert a FAT partition to NTFS

Click Start, click Programs, and then click Command Prompt.
In Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type cmd and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type CONVERT [driveletter]: /FS:NTFS.
Convert.exe will attempt to convert the partition to NTFS.
NOTE: Although the chance of corruption or data loss during the conversion from FAT to NTFS is minimal, it is best to perform a full backup of the data on the drive that it is to be converted prior to executing the convert command. It is also recommended to verify the integrity of the backup before proceeding, as well as to run RDISK and update the emergency repair disk (ERD).

Renaming The Start Button:

To rename the start button, you will need a hex editor.
My preference is UltraEdit

Copy the \windows\explore.exe file to a new name (e.g. explorer_1.exe)
With the hex editor, open that file and go to offset 412b6
You will see the word start with blanks between each letter
Edit it be any 5 characters or less
Save the file
Boot to DOS
Copy the existing c:\windows\explorer.exe to explorer.org
Copy explorer_1.exe to explorer.exe
You will also need to replace the explorer.exe in the c:\windows\system32\dllcache file as well with the new one.
Note: If the partition is NTFS and you can't access the files from DOS:

Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon.
Change the value of Shell from Explorer.exe to explorer_1.exe

I read about this tweak a long time ago and even found out couple of ways of achieving the same results but wasn't sure of the importance. But you know what, there is reason for everything. Assume your are working on computer where you don't really own the computer or is shared with someone else. Do you want maintain privacy and avoid other know what you were doing etc. Then this tweak may be of interest to you. Go to Control panel Administrative tools, local security policy. Then goto local policies ---> security options.Then change the option for "Shutdown: Clear Virtual Memory Pagefile"

Hide a Drive

If you don’t want other users stumbling over a drive while browsing the computer through Explorer, this tweak may help out. Although this tweak will render the drive invisible in Windows Explorer, it will still be accessible through Windows’ search utility, as well as other third-party file managing applications. Microsoft Office applications will also be able to access the cloaked drive with no problem.

To cloak a drive, open up regedit and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Win

dows/CurrentVersion/Policies/Explorer. Create/modify the DWORD value “NoDrives” to match a corresponding drive letter you wish to hide. A: 1; B: 2; C: 4; D: 8; E: 16; F: 32; G: 64; H: 128; I: 256; J: 512; etc. To hide multiple drives, just add the values together and enter the sum as the value for the DWORD value “NoDrives”. To hide all the drives, just enter the value 67108863.

You can try to “fi x” the “win.com” fi le fi rst before reinstalling the operating system
again. This involves replacing the “win.com” fi le on your computer (which is missing or corrupt) with a fresh copy from the Windows 98 CD. All this will be done by entering the MS-DOS prompt mode, running the “extract” command to retrieve the file from the CD and renaming it to “win.com”. If your Windows 98 CD is not 98 startup disk. If this is not available then a downloadable version of it is available on www.bootdisk.com. This bootable disk will take you to a DOS prompt and also load generic CD-ROM drivers so that you can access the contents of the Windows 98 CD. Make sure you choose “Start computer with CD-ROM support” whilst booting from the fl oppy disk. At the DOS prompt enter the following command to extract the file to the partition that contains the “Windows” folder.

extract X:\win98\win98_28.cab\win. cnf /L Y:\windows\

Replace “X” with your CD-ROM drive letter and “Y” with the partition that holds the “Windows” folder. Note that there is a space before and after “/L”. If you have
Windows 98 Second Edition installed then the cab file that contains “win.cnf” is
“Win98_25.cab”.

After the file is extracted and transferred, you will have to rename it with the following command, ren Y:\windows\win.cnf Y:\windows\win.com

If you are warned that you are about to replace a file with the same name, enter
“Y” to confi rm the action.

After replacing the file, restart your computer.

to extract the DAT fi les (video fi les on a VCD are found in the MPEGAV folder)
as “MPG” fi les (right click and extract as MPEG frames) and then use software like
TMPGEnc to convert these fi les to DVD format. Use a DVD authoring software
to create your DVD with these fi les you have just converted to DVD standard. This
method involves more than one software compared to the one-stop method
provided by Nero Vision

Reinstall Windows XP Without Repeating Online Activation

This has probably happened to most of us already. We have XP installed already and when we reinstall it, we are asked to go online and activate it again. You can avoid doing that by backing up a very small file that has the activation information. Before you do this, keep in mind that your hardware should be the same as before when you activated in order for this to definitely work. Go to C:\Windows\System32 and look for wpa.dbl. Copy that file to a floppy. After you finished reinstalling XP, just rename the current wpa.dbl file in C:\Windows\System32 to something like wpa.old

Shutdown Windows Faster

All versions of Windows have the same problem. It usually takes a little longer to shutdown when you have the Exit Sound enabled. To disable this go to Start->Settings->Control Panel->Sounds and Audio Devices->Sounds. Scroll down and look for Exit Windows. Click on it once and then under Sounds, choose None. You should see faster shutdown times.

SEND YOUR FRIENDS A SECRET FILE

Well, did you know you could hide your files in a JPEG file? For this, you will only need to download WinRAR. You just need to have a little knowledge about Command Prompt and have WinRAR installed.

STEPS : -

1. Gather all the files that you wish to hide in a folder anywhere in your PC (make it in C:\hidden (RECOMMENDED).

2. Now, add those files in a RAR archive (e.g. partha.rar). This file should also be in the same directory (C:\hidden).

3. Now, look for a simple JPEG picture file (e.g. cyber.jpg). Copy/Paste that file also in C:\hidden.

4. Now, open Command Prompt (Go to Run and type ‘cmd‘). Make your working directory C:\hidden.

5. Now type: “COPY /b cyber.jpg + partha.rar output.jpg” (without quotes) - Now, cyber.jpg is the picture you want to show, partha.rar is the file to be hidden, and output.jpg is the file which contains both.

6. Now, after you have done this, you will see a file output.jpg in C:\hidden. Open it (double-click) and it will show the picture you wanted to show. Now try opening the same file with WinRAR, it will show the hidden archive .
